Dr. Randall and Nancy Pedersen, Bobby and Becky Johnston
Ginny and the late Brad Aldermann, Randy and Mary Erb
February 10, 2003
These individuals were the cornerstone of protest initiated in April 1999 against the development of the teVelde confined dairy operation in the upper watershed of East Verdigre Creek. This facility was posing an imminent threat to the water quality and trout fishery in the stream, as well as the Trout Rearing Station and Grove Lake downstream. Had it not been for their perseverance and determination, the forces of politics, economics and legal loopholes would likely have prevailed. Today the dairy operation has been abandoned, the cows are gone and the teVeldes have vacated the premises.
Lower Platte South Natural Resources District
February 13, 2001
The Lower Platte South NRD was recognized for their involvement in EPA's Clean Lakes Program, having undertaken major watershed treatment projects on Branched Oak, Wildwood, Olive Creek, Wagon Train, Yankee Hill and Holmes reservoirs. They have also carried out restoration projects either on their own (e.g. Meadowlark) or with assistance from the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (e.g. Wildwood). They have been intimately involved in the Lower
Platte Corridor Alliance, a consortium of three NRDs and seven state agencies joined together in an effort to address natural resources management issues in the Lower Platte River reach. Finally, they have hosted and participated in a number of educational workshops and demonstrations dealing with rehabilitation techniques and best management practices on both land and water resources in their district.
